This book seeks to provide several different benefits. First, Dr. Sharf seeks to explain the history of career counseling and the differences/similarities with clinical mental health counseling. Second, Sharf breaks down different career theories by chapter, which is extremely helpful for understanding differences in theory and what is applicable for specific career issues. Finally, Sharf seeks to show how to best integrate different career theories for advanced effectiveness. This is probably the best aspect of this book as the charts and research base shows how specific theories are more effective than others. This is an excellent book for any career counseling and development class or anyone seeking to work with people with career issues.
The content of the book is good. The problem is that the Kindle version is faulty. Many of the pages are very dark and won't let you highlight the text. It is also hard to read those pages which is very frustrating. Something must have gone wrong when they scanned in the book. This is something that is easily fixed- all they have to do is redo the scan and make sure all the pages are readable.To the powers that be: please fix the kindle version of this!
I think this may be the most bland textbook I've come across in my graduate studies. Redundant and flat, this is a text I'd never refer to and the cost was outrageous! I'll be looking for a better book to add to my professional library as a resource!
I wish "zero stars" was an option. This is the most horribly written text book I have ever read....and I've read a ton during undergrad, law school, MBA program, and now in a Master's program for counseling. It's repetitive, poorly organized, unclear, and unnecessarily elaborative in areas that I didn't even know could be elaborated upon. Excessively belaboring. I will learn more by googling the topics to be covered in this class than I will from this book.
Worst book I have used in counseling to date. Lengthy, boring and useless as far as getting to the point. Sure it is probably required reading for your class, but buy it used, it is kindling afterwards.
This book is great in content. This branch of the counseling profession has lots of opportunities to help individuals. Definitely this book is not appreciated for people who do not understand how career counseling can definitely change the life of an individual. Don't get scared with the content and apply it to yourself! Personal growth warranted!
I thought that this was a very thorough and easy-to-read textbook. It presented the information clearly and the progression of career development theories was in a logical order. My only complaint was that I occasionally had difficulty finding and referencing things that I knew I had read. It was something about the way the headings and index worked.
This book does a great job of explaining the theories most important to career counseling. Would recommend this to any career counseling master's student.
